El Valle is a rural and primarily Hispanic community with an 8% unemployment rate. The average annual income for the approximately 5,000 residents is barely above $12,000 and over 20% of the residents live below the poverty level Many residents still farm the rich and arable land on a limited basis, but few are able to make a full-time living in this manner. Firewood and rock is harvested and sold locally and in Santa Fe and Las Vegas to supplement income. Most households in El Valle are two or three person. About a third of all households have children less than 18 years of age and have persons over 65 years of age. Considering the challenges of rural living it is noteworthy that the area is considered “geographically stable” with over 70% of the population living in the same house for the past five years. |
El Valle ChurchesThe churches along the valley represent some of the oldest and most elegant structures in the region. Dating back to the 18th century, the churches in Villanueva, San Miguel, and San Jose are important elements in local history. Many families have attended services in them for generations. The church in Villanueva is also known for its "colcha" tapestries, hand-embroidered by the women of the village. Learn more here.
