Wide participation and engaging discussion make
YFTM Community Meeting and Festival a success
Over seventy peoplegathered at the El Valle Community Center this past Sunday to celebrate the El Valle Youth Farm to Market program and discuss "Agriculture in El Valle - Past, Present, and Future." The meeting was paired with a summer farm festival that included family activities such as planting seeds, creating recipes, and telling local stories about agriculture in the valley. Participants also sampled "test recipes" from the YFTM kitchen and listened to traditional music performed by Lorain Varela..
The meeting discussion focused on the importance of retaining agriculture in the community and considering ways to make it economically viable. Participants exchanged ideas and strategies for how to achieve these goals, including mentoring youth with experienced growers, choosing specific cash crops for concentrated production, and establishing reliable markets. The discussion also emphasized the importance of valley-wide communication and cooperation in creating economically viable agriculture for the area. The Community Meeting and Summer Farm Festival were presented as part of the MainStreet Frontier Communities Initiative in Villanueava, which is supporting YFTM for the 2016 season.
